Curriculum Overview - Media Studies

Curriculum Intent:

Creative iMedia in Key Stage 4 at Cardinal Hume Catholic School enables pupils to study key areas of the media sector. The Level 2 Cambridge National in Creative iMedia is aimed at pupils aged 14-16 years and will develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills that would be used in the media industry. It is an engaging qualification where pupils use learning in practical, real-life situations.

In Year 10, pupils are following the new specification for first teaching in 2022, J834 Creative iMedia. The pupils in Y11 are still studying the legacy material for final assessment in 2023, J817 Creative iMedia. The main difference for the Y11s this year will be that the unit they complete the course with is titled, R084: Story Telling Using a Comic Strip, using a legacy task, rather than the yearly released tasks for the newly designed unit – R095, Characters and Comics.

They study three units: Skills and qualities

Unit R093: Creative iMedia in the media industry – Year 10 & 11

In this unit pupils will learn about the sectors, products and job roles that form the media industry. They will learn the legal and ethical issues considered and the processes used to plan and create digital media products. They will learn how media codes are used within the creation of media products to convey meaning, create impact and engage audiences. They will learn to choose the most appropriate format and properties for different media products.

Unit R094: Visual identity and digital graphics – Year 10

In this unit pupils will learn how to develop visual identities for clients. They will also learn to apply the concepts of graphic design to create original digital graphics which incorporate a visual identity to engage the target audience.

Unit R095: Characters and comics – Year 11

In this unit pupils will learn to design and create original characters that convey emotion and personality. They will also learn to set their characters within stories of their own making which flow logically and engage the reader. They will also learn to use conventions of comics to tell their characters’ stories across multiple pages.
