Inspirational success for Year 9
What a season it has been for Year 9 football. Having lost their first couple of fixtures, early signs were not great for the team but this was no indication of the success that was just around the corner. The disappointment of those early defeats was soon shrugged off and the team went on a huge unbeaten run across three different competitions. While losing out at the semi-final stage of the Gateshead Cup, the lads won the Gateshead League for the second year running, winning their last five league games without conceding a single goal. The icing on the cake though came on 19th April at the beautiful venue of Durham’s Maiden Castle. Up until that night, there had only been three other teams in our school’s history to have won a Durham County Cup but our lads duly became the fourth with a truly memorable penalty shoot-out victory against a very strong Monkwearmouth opposition. Trailing 2-0 with only seven minutes remaining and up against it, our lads somehow managed to score two late goals to level up the match at two goals apiece. Then heartache as Monkwearmouth went straight down the other end from kick-off to score what looked like the winning goal with only thirty seconds on the clock. What resilience our lads showed though to throw everything at the opposition and claim our second equaliser of the final with literally the last kick of the game. One of the best 3-3 draws you are ever likely to see with the nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out victory bringing just reward for their efforts.
Well done to the whole squad
