Year 10 Girls tackle the ‘Couch to 5K’ challenge
15th January 2016
The C25K is a fantastic running programme that’s been designed to get anybody into running. A group of year 10 girls have taken on the challenge in PE alongside Mrs Matthews. They have also been joined by Mrs Burgess and Mrs Ellender who recently completed the scheme and were happy to help motivate and inspire the girls.
“Running together develops strong relationships.”
“It has been lovely to see how much the girls encourage each other.”
The programme has, so far, been a great success and will hopefully improve the general fitness of all the girls involved and, more importantly, teach them training habits that will stay with them in the future.
Rugby at Cardinal Hume continues to grow and this year has been no exception. For the first time this year we have had school Rugby teams represent Cardinal Hume in each year, from year 7-year 11. We have had well over 100 pupils represent school teams and have had some excellent successes along the way:
- Year 7: Remain unbeaten and Gateshead Cup runners up (losing on points difference!)
- Year 8: Gateshead League Runners up
- Year 9: 3rd place in Gateshead league
- Year 10: Qualified for the Gateshead Schools cup Final
- Year 11: 3rd place in Gateshead league
The year 7 league season starts very soon in which we hope to do very well. Year 7 Rugby training continues to be hugely popular with around 20+ pupils attending each session. Although the league season for other year groups has finished, interest from pupils remains high with many pupils still keen on training and developing their skills further-regardless of the weather!!
This year’s gymnastic club has been a massive success. The students involved have been a pleasure to work with, they have worked extremely hard in order to ensure their performance is professional, precise and interesting for the audience to watch. They have also worked extremely hard at reaching their own personal targets and potential in gymnastics by having the dedicated attitude to turn up every week and work really hard. The students have fully engaged with and enjoyed gymnastic club this year and we look forward to preforming along with all of the other schools on the 1st of December at Gateshead leisure centre.
The gymnastic club has this year raised enough money for all of the students to have new leotards, we did a bake sale which raised enough money to make sure they all had leotards sorted for their performance, next week. This bake sale couldn’t have been done without the help of Mrs Proctor and Mrs Wheelhouse. But on behalf of the gymnastics club and myself we would like to thank Mrs Nelson and Mrs Whinchester and Mrs Matthews for supporting us and organising the purchase of the leotards.
The school netball club has continued to grow within this academic year. More than 80 girls are turning out for training on a weekly basis, eager to improve their netball skills and match play ready for the start of the Gateshead school leagues and tournaments in February.
We have been lucky enough to secure a bursary from Sport England to fund a netball satellite club for our year 7 netball players. We welcome Rebecca Neill; from Team Northumbria Super League Netball, as Head Coach who will help our netballers to take the step from School netball into community sport.
We have continued with our excellent reputation in sports hall athletics this year. The sport is an important part of the PE curriculum in the early part of the school year. In October the majority of our year 7 and 8 pupils took part in a fantastic house competition ran in conjunction with our partners from the Gateshead school sport partnership.
This led on to us competing in the Gateshead schools sports hall athletics championships in November. We have an unrivalled reputation in the sport compared to other schools in the Gateshead area. This was maintained due to outstanding results in these championships.
The following age groups became Gateshead schools team champions.
- Year 8 girls
- Year 8 boys
- Year 9/10 boys
In addition our year 7 girls and year 7 boys teams were a credible second in their team events.
All the above teams have qualified for the Tyne and Wear schools championships at South Shields in January where they will compete against winning schools from Sunderland, Newcastle, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.
