Healthy Child Programme Service

14 June 2018

Dear Parent/Carer

From 1 July 2018, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) will be providing the 0-19 Healthy Child Programme Service in Sunderland and Gateshead, transferring over from South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust (STFT) and will form part of a new approach to working with children, young people and families.

The 0-19 Service will work with children, young people and families in your area and will be made up of Health Visitors, Public Health Nurses, Family Nurse Partnership and support staff delivering on the Healthy Child Programme.

Staff from STFT will be transferring across to HDFT on 1 July 2018. HDFT will work with children, young people and their parents/carers in a variety of settings; schools, health centres, GP surgeries, youth venues and in the family home. The Healthy Child Programme Team will offer routine health checks on children starting school and on transfer to secondary schools.

In addition, the team will work closely with nurseries, schools and colleges to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people. They will continue to be responsible for measuring and weighing children as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.

Every school and GP practice will continue to have a Named Public Health Nurse to ensure communication and referrals into the service are easy and accessible.

To ensure the continuity of care, your child’s health records used to deliver these services will be transferred to or shared with HDFT in order to allow them to continue to provide a high quality service.

We are working closely to focus on making sure services transfer smoothly across to them and there is no gap in care being provided.

For those affected we have included a frequently asked question sheet which may answer queries that you may have relating to transfer of data. However if you have any concerns regarding this change of service or require further information please contact our Community Administration Team on 2831936.

Yours Sincerely

Murphy Mile

Dear Parent/Guardian

This July the staff and students of Cardinal Hume will be undertaking a number of fun activities to raise money for Cancer Research UK. This is a charity close to the heart of our school community as, two years ago, one of our colleagues, Mrs Murphy, tragically lost her battle with a brain tumour.

The main events that week will be:

Tuesday 3rd July: Break time cake sale – all cakes made by staff!

Wednesday 4th July: Our very own Race for life “Murphy Mile”. This is a participation event for ALL students but will this year include our first ever competitive race that students may sign up for.

There will be no charge for participation in the “Murphy Mile” but donation buckets will be available. As an official, registered Race for Life, all participants will receive a medal upon completion of the race and will be given a chance to dedicate their participation in the race to someone they know if they wish. On Wednesday 4th July, all students must come into school wearing their school PE kit and trainers.

We ask for your support in making the “Murphy Mile” Race for Life, and other activities, successful in raising awareness and money for the work of those seeking a cure for cancer. You can do this in a number of ways: by encouraging your child to buy cakes in our cake sale at break on Tuesday 3rd July and by sending in a donation on the day of the Race for Life on Wednesday 4th July. There will also be a number of smaller fundraising activities across the week and collection buckets at all of the events.

Cancer has affected the lives of many of us associated with Cardinal Hume Catholic School in many different ways and we know from last year that some families and children will want to undertake sponsorship to raise as much money for Cancer Research UK as possible. We have therefore included an official sponsorship form for use by those students who wish to try and raise additional funds from their friends and families.  If your child does wish to undertake sponsorship, we ask that all monies and forms are returned by Monday 16th July.

Yours faithfully

Dear Parent/Guardian

Following on from the hugely successful trip to Berlin and Krakow in July, the Humanities Faculty is delighted to offer students from Year 8 – 13 the opportunity to undertake a study and cultural visit to Rome and the Bay of Naples 13th-20th July 2018. The trip, as well as being hugely culturally enriching, has links to the GCSE History specification where students study the significance of the renaissance, the Y12 History specification on the Reformation and to the Geography curriculum’s study of volcanoes.

The trip will cost £925 and is being organised by WST, a nationally recognised provider of school visits abroad. This price includes flights from Newcastle to Rome, transfers to the hotel in Rome and coach transfers to Piano di Sorrento, with students staying on a half board basis.  The provisional itinerary will include in the price:

  • All flights, taxes, transfers etc.
  • Half board stay at the Hotel Mariano, Rome and the Hotel Eden Blue, Piano di Sorrento
  • A guided visit to the Vatican City, including St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum and the Sistine chapel
  • A guided visit to the Colosseum, Roman forum and Palatine Hill
  • A visit to Herculaneum
  • A crater walk at Mount Vesuvius
  • A visit to Pompeii
  • A guided day visit to Phlegraean Fields and Solfatara
  • A Ferry trip to Capri and laser boat ride

Payment Schedule:

In order to secure a place on this trip, a non-refundable deposit of £100 needs to be paid by Wednesday 11th October. This is essential as the flights can change price and failure to meet this deadline could lead to an increase in cost. This deposit can be made at student reception by either cash, cheque or ParentPay. You are then welcome to make smaller, regular payments but the deadlines below need to be met in order to meet the payments to the travel agent

Deposit 2: £100  by 1st December Deposit 3: £365 by 1st March

Deposit 4: £360 by 1st May

We are pleased to inform you that Cardinal Hume Catholic School now has the facility to accept online payments for trips and other school activities.  Using a secure website called ParentPay you are able to pay online using your credit or debit card.  This can be accessed from the School website and you will by now, have received your ParentPay log in.  If you are unable to locate this, please contact the school office for assistance.

Making a payment using your credit or debit card is straightforward.  Your card details are not retained by the school.  ParentPay holds an electronic record of all online payments for you to view at a later date.  When you make a payment, an e-mail confirmation is sent to you, giving you reassurance that the transaction has been successful.

As a reminder please follow instructions below:

Once you have your login details, the system is quick and easy to use:

  • Visit parentpay.com (http://www.parentpay.com/)

We thank you in advance for your support in using this service to pay for your child’s educational visit.

Please note, your child’s place on the trip is dependent upon their continued good behaviour and adherence to the school behaviour policy.  If your child fails to live up to the behavioural expectations of the school, the Head of Faculty and Head of House may make the decision to withdraw your child from the trip.  No refund will be made in this context, unless a replacement can be found to take up that place.

May I also take this opportunity to remind all parents that it is crucial that those students participating in the trip can be trusted to behave in a responsible and mature way. As the leader of the visit, I have to be confident that those taking part do not jeopardise the safety and enjoyment of the trip for others.  Students are also reminded that they will be representing the school during the visit, and it is therefore essential that they behave appropriately.  With this in mind, I will be closely monitoring the behaviour in school of those students involved in the visit.  If any student is considered to have the potential to jeopardise the success of the visit, then I am afraid that they will be unable to participate and their places will be offered to other students and deposits will not be refunded.

Canada Trip in July 2020

Dear parent / carer

Following on from a successful visit to France in July 2016, the MFL Department is delighted to offer your child the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the French speaking world on a trip to Canada in July 2020. This trip has direct links to the French GCSE and A Level Specifications but has much to offer any interested students from Years 7-13 as we will also be visiting many places of historical interest which is fully relevant to History students. We need 30 students to make the trip viable. Should more pupils be interested, places will be allocated on a first come – first served basis.

The trip is being provided by Halsbury Travel, a nationally recognised provider of school trips which has been highly recommended by other local schools. The provisional itinerary would include:

Day 1: travel to London for flight from London to Toronto and CN Tower by night

Day 2: Travel to Niagara, St Catharine’s Museum, lock visit and Hornblower Boat ride

Day 3: Visit to a traditional Native Indian Huron Village, Hockey Hall of Fame and shopping time at the Eaton Centre

Day 4: Travel to Montreal – Fort Henry tour or Upper Canada Village visit where students can see life in 1867 through the eyes of the soldiers and their families

Sugar Shack meal – enjoy a traditional Cabane à Sucre that includes fresh maple syrup.

Day 5: Visit the Fur Trade program and Mont Royal lookout – the Mont Royal Lookout is definitely one of Montréal’s gems. Several different vantage points give you tremendous, breath taking views of the city and surrounding area.
Notre Dame Visit
Travel to Quebec – Legends workshop (speaking French)
Live the legend by re-enacting famous Quebec historical events in a dynamic workshop where you will discover some of the most renowned local legends

Day 6: Citadelle Tour – discover the Old Quebec’s fortress!

Musee de Fort – come and relive, in sound and light, the six sieges of Québec, including the famous Battle of the Plains of Abraham, and Benedict Arnold’s march to Québec.

Evening meal at Aux Anciens Canadiens  and Walking Ghost Tour – as darkness settles over the City of Old Quebec, a costumed tour guide strikes a match and lights a lantern. A hush settles over the group as they wait to discover 350 years of historic murders, executions, ghostly tragedies and hauntings.

Day 7: Montmorency Falls – a natural and historic site that is just breath-taking. The falls are 83 meters or 272 feet (30 meters or 100 feet higher than Niagara Falls)

Copper Museum and Chez Marie – a unique stone house with a bright red roof that was built in 1652, known by the local population as simply “Chez Marie”. The energetic and hospitable owner is proud to welcome people into her home, handed down from mother to daughter for four generations

Transfer to the airport (Montreal or Quebec, flight dependent) for the flight back to London

Day 8: arrive in London and journey back to Gateshead

The cost for this incredible visit will be £2125. This includes half-board accommodation, air fares, entrance to all attractions, travel insurance, and travel to and from London (to be decided at a later date depending on London flight times). As all other costs are covered in the price of the visit, your child will only need to bring spending money for souvenirs or gifts and lunch each day.

Should you wish your child to enjoy this study visit, we need a non-returnable deposit of £125 by MONDAY 15th JANUARY, 2018.

In order to meet the payment schedule set by the travel company, a further payment of £100 must be paid by MONDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2018. Your subsequent £1900 Balance can be paid before May 2020 in £100 instalments via ParentPay online.

With ParentPay you are able to pay online using your credit or debit card.

Once your deposit has been received, you will receive medical forms, emergency contact forms, a code of conduct for all students attending school visits and information about travel documentation.  A parent’s evening will also be organised to answer any questions you may have, and meet myself and the other school staff who will be accompanying your child on the visit.  In the meantime, if you have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me at school.

Berlin Visit

Dear Parent/Guardian

Following on from the successful visit to the WW1 Battlefields in July 2016, the History Department is delighted to offer your child the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust with an eight night, dual centred, study visit to Berlin and Krakow from 4th-12th July 2017 following the story of the Final Solution. This trip has direct links to the Year 9 and A Level Specifications but has much to offer any interested students from Years 9-13.

The trip is being provided by NST, a nationally recognised provider of school trips which has been highly recommended by other local schools. The provisional itinerary would include:

  • Overnight ferry to Amsterdam
  • A workshop in Anne Frank House (please note Anne Frank House only open bookings two months in advance of a visit and this part of the itinerary cannot be guaranteed or confirmed until bookings open)
  • Four night’s full board in Berlin in the Aletto Kudamm Hote,l Berlin. A river cruise, visit to the Reichstag, The museum of Berlin, a tour of the Berlin Bunkers, the Jewish museum and a visit to Wansee House, the birth place of the final solution.
  • Coach transport to Krakow and two night’s accommodation, full board at Hotel Alexander near the main square in Krakow.
  • A day visit to Auschwitz Birkenau extermination camp
  • A visit to the Galicia Jewish museum where the students will meet a holocaust survivor and hear, first hand, their testimony.
  • A night of traditional Polish food, dance and entertainment.
  • Return via Berlin, to Amsterdam and the ferry home to North Shields.

The cost for this incredible visit will be £750. This includes all meals (including dinner and breakfast on the ferry), entrance to all attractions, travel insurance, and luxury coach travel from school. The tour is being facilitated by National School Travel which has come highly recommended by colleagues in another school. As all other costs are covered in the price of the visit, your child will only need to bring spending money for souvenirs or gifts if they wish to do so.

Should you wish your child to enjoy this study visit, we need a non-returnable deposit of £100 either cash or cheque payable to “Cardinal Hume Catholic School” by THURSDAY 28th September, 2016.  This deposit should be handed into Student Reception.

In order to meet the payment schedule set by the travel company, subsequent payments can be made by monthly payments October- April for seven payments of £92.97 on a date in the month which suits you or by cash/cheque to school by the following dates:

Wednesday 23rd November £200              Wednesday 1st March: £250        Monday April 24th:£200
