English Literature

SUBJECT INFORMATION

Unlike most other subjects, English Literature does not consist of a body of knowledge that you can 'learn' in the conventional sense. Instead, you need to develop your own ideas and responses to the texts that you study and to base these responses firmly on evidence that you have gathered from your own readings of these.

AS & A2 COURSE OVERVIEW
Pupils beginning to study AS English Literature from September 2008 will have the opportunity to experience the brand new A Level course layout, which retains much of the previous syllabus, whilst introducing several new and exciting components, such as compulsory post-1990 literature...

In a nutshell, the course will follow the following format:
There will be four units in total

  • Unit 1 and Unit 2 will be completed in year 12 and will make up the AS course
  • Unit 3 and Unit 4 will be completed in year 13 and will make up the A2 course
  • Grades for all units will be collated and count towards your overall GCE A Level grade
  • 40% of the work you do will be assessed through coursework; 60% of the course's assessment is through external examinations.

OPPORTUNITIES

An A Level in English Literature is particularly useful for University courses and careers linked to the media, journalism, administration, law and English itself.
